WELCOME TO MERRIAM-WEBSTER'S SPELL CHECKER!
Version 1.0b
A spell checker is only as good as the word list
it uses to check your spelling. This CD-ROM
includes an expanded Merriam-Webster word list
that automatically increases the number of words
available when you run your spell checker. With
Merriam-Webster's more extensive word list, your
spell checker will be more powerful than ever
before.
The following README file contains important
information about installing and using this
product on your computer. Please read it

*************************************************
Office 2000 Special Installation Steps
*************************************************
In some cases, Office 2000 may not automatically
set Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker as the
default spell checker for Microsoft Word 2000
If you test your installation using the steps
outlined in the "Checking Your Installation"
section of this document and Merriam-Webster's
Spell Checker does not seem to be installed,
try these steps to fix the problem:
1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
2. Select the Spelling & Grammar tab at the top of
the dialog box that appears.
3. Find the Speller Type box in the center right
of that dialog box. Make sure "Complete" is
selected.
4. Click OK and retest your installation.
If the Speller Type box is missing, restart your
computer, then try the steps above again. If you
still have problems, contact technical support
for assistance.
*************************************************
Testing Your Installation
*************************************************
To test whether your spell checker installed
successfully, open a document in the word
processing program in which you are using the
Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker. Copy and paste
the list of words below into a document in that
program and run the program's spell checker
as you normally would.
newbie
bafflegab
mosh
aerobicize
netiquette
If your spell checker questions the spelling of
any of the words in the above list, the
Merriam-Webster Spell Checker has NOT been
installed successfully. Try installing manually,
using the instructions below, then test the above
words again. When your Merriam-Webster Spell
Checker is correctly installed, none of the words
on the list above will be flagged or questioned
by your spell checker.
*************************************************
Installing the Spell Checker Manually
*************************************************
If the Spell Checker will not install
successfully, you may need to install it manually.
Note that Office 2000 may not accept files that
are installed manually.
1. Locate the spell checker dictionary file of the
application you want to use Merriam-Webster's
Spell Checker with. You can do this by using
your system's "Find" feature to search for the
file by name. The files to search for are:
mssp2_en.lex (Microsoft Office and MS Works)
mssp3ena.lex and msspell3.dll (Office 2000)
lotusen1.dic (Lotus Notes)
both lotusen2.dic and lotusen3.dic (Lotus
SmartSuite)
English Dictionary (Microsoft Office for
Macintosh)
(Because Lotus SmartSuite uses two spell
checker dictionary files, you'll have to
perform each of the following steps twice
with this suite.)
2. Rename your program's original spell checker
file by adding the letters BAK at the beginning
of the current name. (Word 2000 users should
skip this step.)
3. For Office 95, 97 and all Lotus products:
Locate the file Mw329809.dat (MW Dictionary
if you have a Macintosh) on the installation
CD-ROM. Word 2000 users should locate the
files mw2000.lex and mssp3xxx.dll files. After
finding the files you need on the CD, copy and
paste them into the directory containing your
program's spell checker files (the directory
you found in Step 1 of these instructions).
4. Once the files are in the correct directory
on your hard drive, rename Mw329809.dat (or
MW Dictionary for the Macintosh) to the name
of the original spell checker file for your
program (that's the file you renamed in step 3).
Word 2000 users do NOT need to rename any files
from the CD-ROM.
5. You may have to restart your computer to
activate the new spell checker files.
*************************************************

*************************************************
Installing If You Have Two Or More Copies Of The
Same Word Processor On Your Computer
*************************************************
If you have two or more copies of Microsoft Word
or any of the other target applications on a single
computer (for example, if you have Word 97 on one
drive and Word 2000 on a different drive), the
automated features of the installer may have trouble
finding one of your installed word processors. If
you note that the installation succeeded for one
program but not the other, run Setup a second time,
choosing only the word processor for which the original
installation failed. If the installation still does
not succeed, you may need to install the spell checker
files manually, as described in the section titled
"Installing the Spell Checker Manually," which appears
earlier in this document.
If you still have problems installing, contact
technical support for assistance (see the section
on Technical Support below for contact information).
*************************************************
Troubleshooting
*************************************************
If you have trouble installing Merriam-Webster's
Spell Checker, try the following steps to correct
the problem:
1. Close all Windows programs before starting
to install the program.
2. If your computer has been running for several
days without being restarted, restart it
before beginning the installation.
3. Be sure you have at least one program that is
compatible with Merriam-Webster's Spell
Checker by consulting the list at the beginning
of this document.
If you are still having problems installing the program,
contact Technical Support for assistance.
*************************************************
Known Technical Issues and Fixes
*************************************************
1. If only selected components of Office 97 are installed
(especially if Word is not installed), the Merriam-
Webster Spell Checker installation may fail because
the installer cannot find the directory where the
spell checker word list must be installed. Two
workarounds are available: either install Word or use
the Windows Find utility to find the file mssp2_en.lex
and manually install the spell checker files according
to the directions given earlier in this document.
2. Windows NT requires Service Pack 5 for the Word 2000
installer to operate properly. Installations for earlier
versions of Word will work with Service Pack 4.
3. Some Lotus SmartSuite users may receive the following
message during installation:
"The file \lotusen3.dic could not be opened. Please check
that your disk is not full and that you have access to
the destination directory."
Despite this message, installation proceeds correctly
and the program is properly set up. Simply check your
installation using the instructions in this document;
if it appears to have succeeded, ignore the message. If
you continue to have problems, contact technical
support for assistance.
