  4. A spell checker is only as good as the word list 
  5. it uses to check your spelling. This CD-ROM 
  6. includes an expanded Merriam-Webster word list 
  7. that automatically increases the number of words 
  8. available when you run your spell checker. With 
  9. Merriam-Webster's more extensive word list, your 
  10. spell checker will be more powerful than ever 
  11. before.

  14. information about installing and using this 
  15. product on your computer.  Please read it 
  16. carefully before you begin using your new software.

  81. Installing Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker

  84. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you exit all 
  85. programs before running the Setup program for your 
  86. new spell checker.

  89. WINDOWS
  90. --------------------
  91. 1.  Insert the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.
  92.  
  93. 2.  Double-click on the CD icon in My Computer, then
  94.     double-click on the file named SETUP or SETUP.EXE
  95.     on the CD-ROM.
  96.  
  97. 3.  Follow the instructions that appear on the 
  98.     screen.
  99.  
  100. If setup does not begin automatically, follow these
  101. steps instead:
  102.  
  103. 2.  Open My Computer and click on your CD-ROM 
  104.     drive letter.
  105.  
  106. 3.  Click on the file called SETUP.
  107.

  110. --------------------
  111. 1.  Insert the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.

  113. 2.  Click on the CD-ROM icon on the desktop.

  120. NOTE: When the installation is complete, you may 
  121. need to restart your computer to enable your 
  122. system to detect the new spell checker.

  126. Office 2000 Special Installation Steps
  127. *************************************************
  128. In some cases, Office 2000 may not automatically
  129. set Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker as the
  130. default spell checker for Microsoft Word 2000
  131. If you test your installation using the steps
  132. outlined in the "Checking Your Installation"
  133. section of this document and Merriam-Webster's
  134. Spell Checker does not seem to be installed,
  135. try these steps to fix the problem:
  136.  
  137. 1.  From the Tools menu, choose Options.
  138.  
  139. 2.  Select the Spelling & Grammar tab at the top of
  140.     the dialog box that appears.
  141.  
  142. 3.  Find the Speller Type box in the center right
  143.     of that dialog box. Make sure "Complete" is
  144.     selected.
  145.  
  146. 4.  Click OK and retest your installation.
  147.  
  148. If the Speller Type box is missing, restart your
  149. computer, then try the steps above again. If you
  150. still have problems, contact technical support
  151. for assistance.
  152.  
  153.  
  154. *************************************************
  155. Testing Your Installation
  156. *************************************************
  157. To test whether your spell checker installed 
  158. successfully, open a document in the word 
  159. processing program in which you are using the 
  160. Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker. Copy and paste 
  161. the list of words below into a document in that 
  162. program and run the program's spell checker 
  163. as you normally would.
  164.

  170.  
  171. If your spell checker questions the spelling of 
  172. any of the words in the above list, the 
  173. Merriam-Webster Spell Checker has NOT been 
  174. installed successfully. Try installing manually, 
  175. using the instructions below, then test the above 
  176. words again. When your Merriam-Webster Spell 
  177. Checker is correctly installed, none of the words 
  178. on the list above will be flagged or questioned 
  179. by your spell checker.
  180.  
  181.  
  182. *************************************************
  183. Installing the Spell Checker Manually
  184. *************************************************
  185. If the Spell Checker will not install 
  186. successfully, you  may need to install it manually.
  187. Note that Office 2000 may not accept files that 
  188. are installed manually.
  189.  
  190. 1. Locate the spell checker dictionary file of the 
  191.    application you want to use Merriam-Webster's 
  192.    Spell Checker with.  You can do this by using 
  193.    your system's "Find" feature to search for the 
  194.    file by  name.  The files to search for are:
  195.  
  196.     mssp2_en.lex (Microsoft Office and MS Works)
  197.     mssp3ena.lex and msspell3.dll (Office 2000)
  198.  
  199.     lotusen1.dic (Lotus Notes)
  200.     
  201.     both lotusen2.dic and lotusen3.dic (Lotus
  202.     SmartSuite)
  203.     
  204.     English Dictionary (Microsoft Office for 
  205.     Macintosh)                  
  206.        
  207.    (Because Lotus SmartSuite uses two spell 
  208.    checker dictionary files, you'll have to 
  209.    perform each of the following steps twice 
  210.    with this suite.)
  211.  
  212. 2. Rename your program's original spell checker 
  213.    file by adding the letters BAK at the beginning
  214.    of the current name.  (Word 2000 users should 
  215.    skip this step.)
  216.  
  217. 3. For Office 95, 97 and all Lotus products: 
  218.    Locate the file Mw329809.dat (MW Dictionary 
  219.    if you have a Macintosh) on the installation 
  220.    CD-ROM. Word 2000 users should locate the 
  221.    files mw2000.lex and mssp3xxx.dll files. After 
  222.    finding the files you need on the CD, copy and
  223.    paste them into the directory containing your
  224.    program's spell checker files (the directory
  225.    you found in Step 1 of these instructions).
  226.  
  227. 4. Once the files are in the correct directory
  228.    on your hard drive, rename Mw329809.dat (or
  229.    MW Dictionary for the Macintosh) to the name
  230.    of the original spell checker file for your
  231.    program (that's the file you renamed in step 3).
  232.    Word 2000 users do NOT need to rename any files 
  233.    from the CD-ROM.
  234.  
  235. 5. You may have to restart your computer to
  236.    activate the new spell checker files.
  237.  
  238.  
  239. *************************************************
  240. Removing Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker
  241. *************************************************
  242. If you want to restore your spell checker's 
  243. original word list and remove the files installed 
  244. with this product, check the list below and find
  245. the name of the program where you installed
  246. Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker. Follow the steps
  247. in the section for your program.
  248.  
  249. Note that for some programs, the Setup Wizard cannot
  250. automatically remove the spell checker files. You
  251. may need to manually remove files that cannot be
  252. deleted automatically.
  253.  
  254. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you exit all 
  255. programs before running the program to remove
  256. Merriam-Webster's Spell Checker. 
  257.  
  258. --------------------
  259. WORD 2000
  260. --------------------
  261. Run the Setup Wizard and choose its Uninstall
  262. option to remove all Merriam-Webster's Spell
  263. Checker files and restore the original spell
  264. checker files that came with your program. No
  265. additional steps are required.
  266.  
  267.  
  268. --------------------
  269. OFFICE 95 or 97
  270. --------------------
  271. 1.  Click on the Start button, choose Programs,
  272.     and open the M-W Spell Checker program group
  273.     (you may have chosen a different name for this group).
  274.  
  275. 2.  Click on UNINSTALL.

  277. 3.  Follow the directions on the screen.

  279. You may have to delete the "MW Spell Checker" program

  314. 1.  Insert the CD-ROM.

  316. 2.  Click on the CD-ROM icon.

  318. 3.  Click on the file called SETUP.

  320. 4.  Click through the splash screen and license 
  321.     agreement; on the third screen click on the 
  322.     pull-down menu labeled "Easy Install" and 
  323.     select "Remove."
  324.  
  325. 5.  Follow the instructions that appear on 
  326.     the screen.
  327.  
  328. NOTE: When the removal is complete, you may 
  329. need to restart your computer to enable your 
  330. system to detect the restored spell checker.
  331.  
  332.  
  333. *************************************************
  334. Installing If You Have Two Or More Copies Of The
  335. Same Word Processor On Your Computer
  336. *************************************************
  337. If you have two or more copies of Microsoft Word 
  338. or any of the other target applications on a single
  339. computer (for example, if you have Word 97 on one
  340. drive and Word 2000 on a different drive), the 
  341. automated features of the installer may have trouble
  342. finding one of your installed word processors. If
  343. you note that the installation succeeded for one
  344. program but not the other, run Setup a second time,
  345. choosing only the word processor for which the original
  346. installation failed. If the installation still does
  347. not succeed, you may need to install the spell checker
  348. files manually, as described in the section titled
  349. "Installing the Spell Checker Manually," which appears
  350. earlier in this document.
  351.  
  352. If you still have problems installing, contact
  353. technical support for assistance (see the section
  354. on Technical Support below for contact information).
  355.  
  356.  
  357. *************************************************
  358. Troubleshooting
  359. *************************************************
  360. If you have trouble installing Merriam-Webster's
  361. Spell Checker, try the following steps to correct
  362. the problem:
  363.  
  364.   1. Close all Windows programs before starting
  365.      to install the program.
  366.  
  367.   2. If your computer has been running for several
  368.      days without being restarted, restart it
  369.      before beginning the installation.
  370.  
  371.   3. Be sure you have at least one program that is
  372.      compatible with Merriam-Webster's Spell
  373.      Checker by consulting the list at the beginning
  374.      of this document.
  375.  
  376. If you are still having problems installing the program,
  377. contact Technical Support for assistance.
  378.  
  379.  
  380. *************************************************
  381. Known Technical Issues and Fixes
  382. *************************************************
  383.   1. If only selected components of Office 97 are installed
  384.      (especially if Word is not installed), the Merriam-
  385.      Webster Spell Checker installation may fail because
  386.      the installer cannot find the directory where the
  387.      spell checker word list must be installed. Two
  388.      workarounds are available: either install Word or use
  389.      the Windows Find utility to find the file mssp2_en.lex
  390.      and manually install the spell checker files according
  391.      to the directions given earlier in this document.
  392.  
  393.   2. Windows NT requires Service Pack 5 for the Word 2000
  394.      installer to operate properly. Installations for earlier
  395.      versions of Word will work with Service Pack 4.
  396.  
  397.   3. Some Lotus SmartSuite users may receive the following
  398.      message during installation:
  399.  
  400.      "The file \lotusen3.dic could not be opened. Please check
  401.      that your disk is not full and that you have access to
  402.      the destination directory."
  403.  
  404.      Despite this message, installation proceeds correctly
  405.      and the program is properly set up. Simply check your
  406.      installation using the instructions in this document;
  407.      if it appears to have succeeded, ignore the message. If
  408.      you continue to have problems, contact technical
  409.      support for assistance.
  410.

  439. you can print and use to register your software.  
  440. Alternatively, you could fill out the form in a

  443. the form (Register.rtf or Register.doc) for 
  444. more details.

  468.      duration of Merriam's copyright in the 
  469.      SOFTWARE. You agree you will not copy the 
  470.      SOFTWARE except as necessary to use it on 
  471.      not more than two single computers 
  472.      in accordance with the terms of this license. 
  473.      You may install the SOFTWARE on not more than 
  474.      two computers, provided that there is no 
  475.      possibility that the SOFTWARE can be used on

  502. 3.   Reverse Engineering.  You agree that you will 
  503.      not attempt, and if you are a corporation, 
  504.      you will use your best efforts to prevent 
  505.      your employees and contractors from 
  506.      attempting, to reverse compile, modify, 
  507.      translate, or disassemble the SOFTWARE in 
  508.      whole or in part.

  510. 4.   Limited Warranty.  Merriam warrants that 
  511.     the SOFTWARE will perform substantially in 
  512.      accordance  with the accompanying 
  513.      documentation and that the  documentation 
  514.      and diskettes are free from any  physical 
  515.      defects for a period of ninety (90) days 
  516.      from  the date of purchase ("Limited 
  517.      Warranty"). EXCEPT FOR THE FOREGOING LIMITED 
  518.      WARRANTY, MERRIAM MAKES NO OTHER EXPRESS 
  519.      OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES TO THE EXTENT

  549. 6.   Customer Remedies.   Merriam's entire 
  550.      with respect to the SOFTWARE shall be, 
  551.      at Merriam's option, either to (a) 
  552.      correct the error, (b) help you work around 
  553.      or avoid the  error or (c) authorize a 
  554.      refund, so long as the SOFTWARE documentation 
  555.      and diskettes are returned to Merriam with 
  556.      a copy of your receipt. This Limited 
  557.      Warranty is void if failure of the SOFTWARE 
  558.      has resulted from accident, abuse, or 
  559.      misapplication. Any replacement SOFTWARE 
  560.      will be warranted for the remainder of the 
  561.      original warranty period.
  562.  
  563. 7.   Severability.   In the event of invalidity 
  564.      of any provision of this Agreement, the 
  565.      parties agree that such invalidity shall not 
  566.      affect the validity of the remaining 
  567.      portions of this Agreement.

  569. 8.   Export.   You agree that you will not 
  570.      export or re-export the SOFTWARE without 
  571.      the appropriate United States or foreign 
  572.      government licenses.
  573.  
  574. 9.   Governing Law.   This Agreement will be 
  575.      governed by thebe laws of Massachusetts as 
  576.      they are applied to agreements between 
  577.      Massachusetts residents entered into and 
  578.      to be performed entirely within Massachusetts.
  579.  
  580. 10.  Entire Agreement.   This is the entire 
  581.      agreement between you and Merriam which 
  582.      supersedes any prior agreement,
  583.      whether written or oral, relating to 
  584.      the subject matter of this Agreement.
